Printing & Digital Advertising Specifications
Print Process: Four-color web offset, coated stock. Lubes'n'Greases
Magazine is saddle-stitched. Sourcebook is perfect bound.
Trim Size: 8-3/8 inches by 10-7/8 inches (212.725 mm by 276.225
mm)
Color: Standard process colors (cyan, magenta, yellow, black).
All colors are four-color process screen builds. We will screen build
to match any Pantone PMS color specified by advertiser.
Color Proofs: Advertisers must provide a chromalin-type SWOP-approved
proof for all four color ads.
Bleeds: Minimum of 1/8 inch bleed required on all edges that
bleed.
Paper:
Lubes’n’Greases: 60 pound #3 sheet.
Sourcebook: 45 pound #3 sheet.
Digital Ads: Only electronic files are accepted. Negatives
are not accepted.
Software: QuarkXPress for Macintosh is preferred.
The following software programs are supported; any other applications,
such as PowerPoint and Word, are not acceptable. Supported software:
- QuarkXPress.
- Illustrator (with type converted to outlines, saved as EPS, and
with all linked files).
- Photoshop (saved as TIFF or EPS).
- InDesign.
- PDF/X-1A files. (Visit our printer’s web site for information
on creating high-res PDF files from QuarkXPress v.6 or 6.5 at www.unitedlitho.com/quark6.htm;
or from InDesign CS/CS2 at www.unitedlitho.com/indesign.htm.)
Fonts: Supply both printer and screen fonts, including
fonts embedded in art files. Do not use pseudo-type commands. For example,
if italics are desired, use the italic version of the font, not the
italic style.
Scans:
- Save scanned images as TIFF or EPS files.
- Line art should be scanned at 900 dpi and saved as a TIFF. Do not
scan line art as a halftone. (In PhotoShop, use the “Bitmap”
mode.)
- Black-and-white photos should be scanned at 300 dpi as grayscale.
The shadow dot should not exceed 91 percent. Any dot under 4 percent
will drop to white.
- Four-color images should be scanned at 300 dpi and converted to
CMYK (do not leave as RGB), using UCR for separation type, with an
ink limit of 280 percent. The high-res image should be imported directly
into the document.
- Scan photographs and transparencies as close to the actual reproduction
size as possible; a 20 percent margin plus or minus is optimum. Do
not send unnecessarily large high-resolution files.
- For digitized film prepared on a copy dot scanner, call for specifications.
What to Send on Your Disk:
- The file containing the ad (for example, QuarkXPress file).
- Any support files that are incorporated into the ad (for example,
logo scans, images).
- The screen and printer fonts used. Fonts must still be included
even if the ad is saved as an EPS file. Look closely for any EPS files
embedded within your ad (such as a logo) that may use fonts, and include
those as well. When using Multiple Master fonts, the entire family
of fonts must be included, regardless of whether or not all the versions
are used in the ad. Variations caused by font substitutions due to
fonts not being sent or converted as appropriate are the responsibility
of the advertiser.
Other Things to Send:
- A printout of the contents of your disk. The most recent hard-copy
printout of the ad, specifying which software program was used in
its creation (for example, InDesign/Mac or QuarkXPress/PC).
- A black-and-white composite laser. A color-separated laser proof
at 100 percent of the image should also be provided with color ads.
If your ad contains four-color scanned images or builds of three or
more colors, provide a color proof made using a SWOP-approved device.
Shifts in color due to differences between the file and the proof
are the responsibility of the advertiser.
- Compatible media include CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD+R, and 100MB and
250MB Zip disks.
General Requirements:
- The digital ad must match the magazine’s trim size, with 0.125
inch bleed and 0.1875 inch margin tolerance. That is, copy that you
do not want to bleed or trim must be positioned 0.1875 inches away
from the trim. Total area density should not exceed SWOP density of
280 percent.
- Do not submit color files for black-and-white ads. Any intervention
required to convert these files will result in additional charges
to the advertiser.
- High-resolution images from stock-photo disks should be converted
to CMYK TIFFs and then placed directly into the document. Additional
charges may result if non-linked low-resolution files are left in
the document.
- Tints and color type in a four-color advertisement must be produced
in a CMYK equivalent.
- If you have made an EPS file for your ad, please supply it as well
as your original application files in case the EPS file does not image
correctly or a modification is necessary.
